32
Report of the Tree Warden
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and
the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
This is my report for the year ending December 31, 1971
Work was still continued against the infestation of the
Gypsy Moth which was pretty bad in the Red Brook Area,
also Cotuit Road and South Sandwich Road by the Rod &
Gun club.
The aerial survey conducted by the Department of Na-
tural Resources showed about two hundred acres of infested
I acres, which the supervisor for this area said was not worth
:bothering with as they were pretty well dispersed.
He said it could be pretty well controlled by the com-
plaints and the hydraulic spraying.
The Gypsy Moth like death and taxes is here to stay.
This year we are asking for a new truck, new sprayer, as
i' the old one is pretty obsolete — 1955 truck and 1942 spraying
machine — impossible to get some of the parts in magneto
assembly.
We took down five dead Elm trees — dead from the in-
fection from Dutch Elm Beetle.
It's quite a few for the small amount of Elms we have in
this town.
The Tent Caterpillar keeps popping up, but altogether in
comparison with other Towns we seem to be in pretty good
shape according to the Supervisor for this area from the
Department of Natural Resources and the Bureau of Pest
Control.
Respectfully submitted,
STACEY D. AVANT,
Tree Warden
