23
Report of the Chief of Police
TO: Honorable Board of Selectmen and
Citizens of the Town of Mashpee
As we look at 1972 in retrospect, we are happy to report that
there were no violent crimes in the Town, however, we are dis-
mayed by the large number of forcible entries into dwellings and
the theft of personal property. As the number of houses increase.
and the increase has been tremendous for this Town, the crime
increases and it becomes more difficult to combat this crime with
the present force.
Breaking & Entering and Larceny. An estimate of the value
of items stolen as a result of B&E's has been placed at $65,868.01.
Insurance reimbursements can never replace the value of some
prize possessions. Two police cruisers patrolling a 24 square mile
area do not provide the citizens adequate coverage.
Burglar Alarms. This device is recommended especially to
citizens who are away for short or long periods of time. We were
successful in apprehending persons who entered where an alarm
had been installed. On the other occasions the alarm was instru-
mental in deterring burglars.
Doors & Windows Open. Eighty three were found open. You
could be a victim. In 10 minutes or less, your possessions could be
taken. It is important to lock all windows and doors during day-
time or nighttime.
Mileage — Police Vehicles. Mileage in 1972 exceeded the
previous year by 51,896. The attempt is being made to deter
crime.-However, there is a limit to the development of the present
vehicles utilizing the one-man cruiser system.
Police Education. Two sergeants and one patrolman gradu-
ated from the 10 week State Police Academy of Framingham,
Which was projected in 1971. The entire force is qualified in basic,
advance and specialist schools.
.
