Some people ask, "Yes, but where was Civil <br /> Defense?" The answer is that "Civil Defense" was there. It was <br /> the fire, police, public works and other forces of government deal- <br /> ing with the emergency in an effective, coordinated manner. <br /> "Civil defense operations" occur when a local government <br /> ;p responds to any massive emergency — a tornado, flood, or other <br /> # natural disaster; a major fire, explosion, or industrial accident; a <br /> civil disorder or disturbance; or a nuclear attack. <br /> Monthly meetings were attended at C.D. Sector Hq. by your <br /> Director and the C.D. communications unit participated in monthly <br /> radio drills within the sector net. Monthly NAWAS (Air Warning <br /> j Capabilities) tests were conducted in conjunction with the Police <br /> a and Fire Departments. The warning tests emanate from the Barn- <br /> stable County Radio Network via the Fire and Police Radio sys- <br /> tems whose operators in tum notify the Civil Defense Director. A <br /> report is made and forwarded to the State CD Hq. <br /> The surplus property program this year netted the town de- <br /> partments $18,046.65 for only $640.95. <br /> ' Two firefighters attended a firefighter course at the CD <br /> i <br /> Academy at Topsfield and one firefighter attended a radiological <br /> course.
