i
I
46
The Mashpee Historical Commimion Report,
II
To the Honorable Board of Selechnen
and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
j
It is justly said by an eminent writer, "NOT TO KNOW
n
WHAT TOOK PLACE BEFORE WE WERE BORN, IS AL-
WAYS TO REMAIN A CHILD." This remark is equally true,
whether it is applied to our knowledge of nations, or people. Our
experience and observation must of necessity be very limited. We
may study individual characters and obtain a knowledge of passing
events; but they compose a very small part of what may in time be
known as the whole picture of life. An effectual record of the past,
whether transmitted to us in print, films, or tapes; by historians or
biographers; may impart to us useful instruction.
The events of the past, throw much light upon the present
conditions and future prospects of any society. Therefore, it is our
intention to present to the people of our town and visitors alike,
a clearer picture and better understanding of Mashpee thru exhibits
of priceless artifacts, relics and documents; as well as an education
program, geared to supplement the American history.
The Wampanoag heritage in this area dates back 10,000 years;
so we are told by the archeologists. From the year 1650-1870 the
a District known as Marshpee, (presently known as Mashpee) was an
' f j Indian Reservation, one of several located within the confines of
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This fact in itself indicates
a history of intrigue and a life style completely different from other
! 1 communities in this state; therefore, it is imperative that the Indian
heritage be an intricate part of this town as long as it exists.
;I With the near completion of the Avant House Restoration and
Preservation Project, we are looking forward to becoming opera-
tional, as an INDIAN MUSEUM. Proposed target date for open-
'' ing the doors to school children is set for mid May 1973. Plans are
formulating to officially dedicate the museum during the Annual
Indian Pow-Wow, which will be held on the second week-end in
July 1973, with appropriate ceremonies.
Many displays and documents have been offered either for
temporary loan, permanent loan or as a donation to the Town of
