I y
128
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
1 To the School Committee and the Citizens
of the Town of Mashpee:
Whether ones uses the so-called "new" math, or the older
a
and more traditional approach, the worth of a year's work is
k, still equal to the, sum of its many parts. As I reflect on the
many parts of the work of the Mashpee Public Schools in
! 1973, I feel both gratitude and inner:satisfaction from the
awareness of many "plus" signs.
. Certainly a very dedicated, hard-working School Commit-
tee is one such "plus." This three-member committee proves
' that size does not always equal output, for Milton Glass, Leo
Houston, and Judith Alberico have been doing the work of
many more people. In particular, may I express my personal
f y appreciation to Mr. Houston, who retired in December.after
a many years of devoted service to the town and especially to
' ' the school system.
k ;
a I Kenneth Coombs is another big "plus." He is so quietly
1 conscientious and always so considerate of the needs, feelings,
j and ideas of everyone that working with him is a real pleas-
ure. His entire school staff represents yet another positive
x ( }t force for which all of us can be grateful.
r `I ,
I ( As 1973 is reviewed with reference first to the Samuel G.
Davis School, I feel that the decisions to relate the school to
" such regional and national sources of strength as the Educa-
tional Research Council of America, ERR (Education Redirec-
t tion and Recycling), and now Project SPOKE, all add up to
an,impressive sum. These associations put our school person-
nel in close touch with nationwide developments in educa-
tion. They also bring to us locally the best in consulting serv-
ices, together with the specialists we need to provide a proper
,t > In-Service Training Program for our school personnel. As a
result of these valuable relationships, both the shape and the
scope of the Davis School Curriculum are changing and im-
proving steadily.
Perhaps the most exciting as well as the most immediate
change at the Davis School will begin to take place in Sep-
tember of 1974 by means of the school's participation in the
f
