REPORT OF THE OTIS TASK FORCE <br /> 'I <br /> To the Honorable Board of Selectmen <br /> and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee: <br /> During the calendar year of 1975, the Otis Task Force has been successful <br /> in bringing about the location on Otis Air Force Base of two large Federal <br /> projects. These new installations will mean increased employment and substan- <br /> tial economic gains to the four-town area of Bourne, Falmouth, Sandwich, and <br /> Mashpee; which comprise the Task Force. <br /> Some of the projects of the Task Force met with disappointment during 1975 <br /> but listed below are three definite gains which should hnot ave <br /> Cod: long-range, <br /> but immediate and positive economic impact on Upp Cap <br /> 1. The Task Force has taken an active part in the successful <br /> work done in preserving rail services on the Cape. <br /> 2. The location on Otis, by the Veteran's Administration, of <br /> a National Cemetery. This cemetery Connewill ryer Avenu eoxi <br /> and <br /> mately 785 acres between Route #28, Y <br /> the Hospital Area. <br /> on Otis of a U. S. Air Force Radar <br /> 3 The Scanning bSystemnt ThiSyst m will cover 70 aces n the <br /> Otis-Camp Edwards section. <br /> he Task Force hopes to bring to completion in <br /> Some of the projects which t <br /> early 1976 include: <br /> 4 i a. Granting to the Town of Sandwich 70 acres in the northeast <br /> 4 sector of the Base to be used as a Town Cemetery. <br /> �jb. Making available to the Bourne Water District approxi- <br /> mately 16 acres to be used for a stand pipe. <br /> r <br /> c. Locating a Veteran's Administration Medical facility <br /> s and/or service facility at Otis. <br /> t d. The possibility of a recreation, crafts and visitors <br /> 1 <br /> center on Otis; drawing upon funds from the Economic <br /> Development Agency. <br /> I e. The location of a School of Veterinary Medicine at Otis <br /> ' which would be privately funded. <br /> Ef. The possibility of locating a Solar Energy Laboratory <br /> at Otis. <br /> i <br /> i <br /> g. The bringing to the Cape of a Civil Service Agency rep- <br /> resentative to help Cape Codders obtain employment at <br /> the new Federal projects. <br /> h. A proposal by the U.S. Army to use 1,000 acres at Otis <br /> f for an Army Mobilization Center. <br /> The establishment of the National Cemetery and Radar System at Otis should <br /> However, the <br /> bring approximately 350 permanent jobs to this area in the future. <br /> actual work on the construction at these two sites should bring about an imme <br /> fate improvement in employment to this sadly depressed area. These instal <br /> lations, especially the Radar site, may also bring some satellite light industry <br /> here in the not too distant future. <br /> 104 <br />
