U <br />,•t';€ :{: CAPE COD PLANNING & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION IN 1975 <br /> r` I. <br /> The Commission continues to provide under its Economic Development <br /> Administration grant: <br /> technical assistance to town economic development committees <br /> assistance to businessmen in marketing and expansion studies <br /> I <br /> economic data maintained for public use <br /> sTransportation Planning: Making It Easier to Get Around <br /> The Commission is participating in a cooperative transportation planning <br /> process with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation and Con- <br />_ struction and the Department of Public Works. All Cape towns participate <br />{ w ! in the planning process through representation on the Cape Cod Joint Trans- <br /> r portation Committee. <br /> One of the major activities of the CCJTC and transportation planning <br /> ` s staff this past year was pursuing means of maintaining rail freight service to <br /> f r Cape Cod. This service is a vital factor in the Cape's economy, ease and <br /> safety of material access and environment. A rail use survey was conducted <br /> t in cooperation with the State Office of Transportation and Construction and the <br />! information obtained was helpful in illustrating the Cape's needs to the General <br /> Ci In and to the Governor. In the last week of the year, the General Court <br /> passed a Transportation Bond Issue which insures the subsidy of the Cape's <br /> rail lines for two years, purchase of the rail rights of way and upgrading of <br /> , 1 the track from 10 mph currently to a 25 mph service level. <br /> Other important issues addressed by the CCJTC in 1975 were: <br /> r Highways and Roads <br /> Successful restoration of four lanes at Rt. 6 in Eastham <br /> ' with reduced speed limit. <br /> 4 <br /> r <br /> a ; Provision for an interchange at the intersection of Free- <br /> man's Way and Rt. 6 in Brewster now under construction. <br /> h would provide <br /> .� f' Extension of Old Town House Road whic <br /> r an East-West connector between Rt. 132 in Hyannis and Rt. 134 <br /> in Dennis. <br /> 1[ Public Transportation <br /> bj <br /> The CCPEDC and Cape-Islands Home Care Inc. worked <br /> together to prepare a successful application securing funds from <br /> rA <br /> the U.S. Department of Transportation for transporting elderly <br /> and handicapped residents to medical facilities and doctor's <br /> offices throughout the County. <br /> The CCPEDC is presently analyzing whether increased <br /> public transportation is a practical possibility for Barnstable <br /> County under a grant from the Urbas Mass Transportation <br /> Administration. Upon approval of a feasible five-year program <br /> by the U.S. Department of Transportation, towns will become <br /> eligible for 8010 Federal funding for capital equipment such as <br /> buses or vans.
