U ,•t';€ :{: CAPE COD PLANNING & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION IN 1975 r` I. The Commission continues to provide under its Economic Development Administration grant: technical assistance to town economic development committees assistance to businessmen in marketing and expansion studies I economic data maintained for public use sTransportation Planning: Making It Easier to Get Around The Commission is participating in a cooperative transportation planning process with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation and Con- _ struction and the Department of Public Works. All Cape towns participate { w ! in the planning process through representation on the Cape Cod Joint Trans- r portation Committee. One of the major activities of the CCJTC and transportation planning ` s staff this past year was pursuing means of maintaining rail freight service to f r Cape Cod. This service is a vital factor in the Cape's economy, ease and safety of material access and environment. A rail use survey was conducted t in cooperation with the State Office of Transportation and Construction and the ! information obtained was helpful in illustrating the Cape's needs to the General Ci In and to the Governor. In the last week of the year, the General Court passed a Transportation Bond Issue which insures the subsidy of the Cape's rail lines for two years, purchase of the rail rights of way and upgrading of , 1 the track from 10 mph currently to a 25 mph service level. Other important issues addressed by the CCJTC in 1975 were: r Highways and Roads Successful restoration of four lanes at Rt. 6 in Eastham ' with reduced speed limit. 4 r a ; Provision for an interchange at the intersection of Free- man's Way and Rt. 6 in Brewster now under construction. h would provide .� f' Extension of Old Town House Road whic r an East-West connector between Rt. 132 in Hyannis and Rt. 134 in Dennis. 1[ Public Transportation bj The CCPEDC and Cape-Islands Home Care Inc. worked together to prepare a successful application securing funds from rA the U.S. Department of Transportation for transporting elderly and handicapped residents to medical facilities and doctor's offices throughout the County. The CCPEDC is presently analyzing whether increased public transportation is a practical possibility for Barnstable County under a grant from the Urbas Mass Transportation Administration. Upon approval of a feasible five-year program by the U.S. Department of Transportation, towns will become eligible for 8010 Federal funding for capital equipment such as buses or vans.
