44
r,
Report ®f the Shellfish Warden
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
Town of Mashpee
Gentlemen:
I hereby submit my report for the year ending December
31, 1952. During the year 1952 there were 37 Commercial
shellfish permits issued at the cost of $2.00 each. There were
169 family permits issued. I think this is very good and hope
we can do better in the coming year.
There was a good supply of seed scallops last summer in
Waquoit bay. In August they looked good, but when the sea-
y son opened in October, the eyes were very poor. The prices
i, were poor for Waquoit scallops and fishermen had to take
II
i ;,3 their fish to Hyannis to sell. There is a good supply of seed
scallops in Waquoit bay, and some in Popponesett bay this
year. The weather has been good this winter, and there
lv' s should be a good season this year.
Quahauging was not too good`this year, due to the grass
,I! in Waquoit bay. Most of the fishermen had to fish in Pop-
7
ponesett bay:' The grass in this bay has been there for 4 to
f} 5 years and there is nothing that can be done.
The oysters in Popponesett bay have been nearly cleaned
ki a I4 out. I have met with the Selectmen and it was agreed to close
Popponesett bay to the taking of oysters for 1 year.
Respectfully submitted,
II I VINCENT C. LOPEZ
Shellfish Constable
