75
Town Clerk's Report
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and
to the Inhabitants of the Town of Mashpee
I take this opportunity to convey to you several important
things, a few of which I'll bring to your attention.
First, I would like to impress on every member of the
community how important it is to have your birth and mar-
riages properly recorded. Verification of the birth of your
child should be sent back to the Town Clerk as promptly as
possible, so that any error can be corrected at the time.
Your birth certificates are absolutely necessary when ap-
plying for social security, retirement, soldiers benefits, old
age assistance, and for other reasons too numerous to mention.
I have known payments or benefits to be delayed because
of the fact a birth or marriage has not been properly re-
corded and sometimes not at all.
Since I've been in office I have established dates of births,
deaths, and marriages for retirement and other legal pur-
poses.
Some of these cases have been long drawn out affairs
but we accomplished it in the end, but this could have been
avoided if the records were taken care of promptly at the
proper time.
I have made it my first duty to record these vital records
as soon as they come into my office because I have learned
how important these records are when needed.
I shall be ever grateful to Deputy Secretary of State
Arthur Hassett of the Division of Vital Statistics whose
many years of service in that department has given me
valuable aid in solving some difficult problems.
