43
Report of the Civil Defense Council
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
Gentlemen & Madam:
I hereby submit my report for the year ending December
31, 1958.
I regret to say that the Civil Defense Unit in this Town
is practically non-existent and unless there is more coopera-
tion of the public the only thing you can be sure of is the
warning of any emergency. In the past I have had to call
on our firemen to fill in where needed. I'm sure we all realize
that in a serious disaster such as a Tornado, Hurricane or
act of war the firemen and Police Department will have their
own duties and can not do the other necessary tasks.
The Civil Defense deparment is organized for the pro-
tection of the public. There is always the question of what
do I get from it. The answer is the training in the use of
special equipment and methods for the protection and care
of yourself, family and friends. Civil Defense is everyone's
job. Don't leave it to others as they may be leaving it up to
you. There are plans set up for the Town but without person-
nel they are useless. Anyone wishing to do his part is welcome
to assist, as tomorrow may be too late.
Respectfully submitted,
ELLSWORTH PETERS
Civil Defense Director
