Few school systems have escaped the school building problem. Mashpee is now faced with such ,1, 3 a study. In 1956 the Samuel G. Davis School had a member- ship of 56. In 1957 there were 68 enrolled, and in 1958 we reached,a total of 93, or an increase of 37 over the 1956 en- rollment. Included in the present total enrollment are 38 t federally-connected pupils. � S 5; If the student increase had been evenly distributed among the eight grades, we might possibly have been able to post- pone the study one year. However, this is not the case. ,:In q, grades 1 and 2 we have 20 first graders and 19 second graders, all housed in a classroom with a capacity of about 25 pupils. # The teaching of first and second grade children is depend- -N -x,i ent upon much individual instruction. It is most important 1` that there be effective teaching at these levels as the foun- dation is laid here for all future education. Thirty-nine pu- pils are altogether too- man for one teacher in the p g y primary '1 grades. Therefore, Mrs. Elise West was hired in January. 1959, to teach some of these children. It was hoped to find tr a suitable room large enough to take care of all of grade 2, 81 and which the State Department of Public Safety would ap- prove. We were not able to find such a room. The only course + then was to split the second grade and assign Mrs. West to R. our small teachers' room with part -of the second grade. This has helped to improve the condition, but it is not an ideal solution. It should be considered a very temporary measure. t't a d", � 1 �F t i .
