Final Study Report f
Mashpee Historic District `'
and executed in brick, the Samuel G. Davis School/Mashpee Town Hall on Great Neck Road
North (MHC 15) and Mashpee Public Library/Archives Buildina at 13 Great Neck Road North
OyMC 14Z
In addition to the historic properties in the district, there are a number of mid 20'' century and
modem residences as well as a few commercial buildings. This group is visually harmonious
with the historic buildings being similar in height, massing, materials, and with predominantly
gable roofs. There are a few vernacular 1-story cottages and 2-story buildings as well as a range
of reproduction Capes and ranch houses. These more recent houses often have attached garages.
Open space is a significant characteristic of the rural Mashpee Historic District. Distinctive F
green areas include the natural landscapes of Noisy Hole Conservation Area, Bessie Bog, and
Herring Run, as.well as the carefully laid out Community Park and Veterans Garden. The site of
the Attaquin Hotel, an important feature of the traditional town center, is also now a naturally
vegetated area.
The Mashpee Comprehensive Historical and Architectural Survey completed by PAL in 1999-
2000, specifically forms for Area A and Area E, is incorporated by reference. Copies of the
inventory are on file with the Town and the MHC. The historic properties in the proposed
Mashpee Historic District are briefly described below, beginning at the north end and.proceeding
southward.
Historic Properties Inventory
Mashpee Center (MHC Area A) (note: the local district boundaries include fewer
resources than the area form).
Main Street(Ashumet Road to Lovell's Lane)
i
Attaquin Burial Ground on Main Street (MSH-HA-6), dating from the 19'h and 20th centuries, is i
located on the north side of the road across from the entrance to Ashumet Road. Set on a 4,316
square foot rectangular lot, the cemetery is bound by a chainlink fence on all four sides. The
cemetery has no vehicular access due to its small size, although a pedestrian entrance exists on
the south side. Landscaping consists of a flat, grass-covered terrain while grass, trees, and
shrubs appear outside the perimeter of the chainlink fence. Approximately 20 gravestones are
set in rows running east-west. The majority of the stones are granite with simple square or
round-arch tops. Floral and urn and willow motifs appear throughout. Some of the stones are in
need of maintenance with several broken or fallen stones and some covered with lichen or moss.
The Jones/Pocknett House at 460 Main Street (MHC 11), built circa 1850, is located across the
street from the Attaquin Burial Ground on Main Street. It is a one-and-one-half-story, L-shaped
building with cross-gables that is sheathed in wood shingles and set on a stone foundation. An
offset entrance is located on the south ell, set within a simple wood surround. Fenestration
consists of 2/2 double-hung sash windows set within simple wood surrounds. An interior brick
chimney and a shed-roof dormer pierce the east roof slope of the south ell. The building is set
back approximately 15 feet from the street and is set on a flat terrain with grass, trees and shrubs.
