NUSHPEE PI-Xa4-I-NG BCARD ME-ETU4G
Wednesday, October 21 , 1987
Planning Boatel Members Present: Richardson Jonas, Scott McAskill,
Louise Behnian, Judy Mills and
Tony Ferra, amo.
Also Present: Town Engineer-Charle3 Rowley and Town Planner-Tom Fudala.
Dr. William Kerfoot - Report on status, of Mashpee//Santuit Rivers Water
uality Study.
Dr. Kerfoot; They have been involved for a year under a contract with
the Town for study of the Santuit and Mashpee River watershed. A plan
was presented showing a yellow area which represented the watershed
area for the Mashpee River and a red area showing the Santxdt watershed,.
One of the reasons they were asked to go forward with the study was
because these areas show chronic bacterial pollution. In fact, shell-
fish beds have been closed down periodically for some time. There have
been a number of historical studies attempting to discover what the
soiLrcea of bacteria are. They have been. asked specifically to do septic
leaching suz-veys along the shore area. They have been asked to look at
the distribution of that 'aave been thought to '-e a source
of bacteria; and, I-ea erally lcok at oauses as to why this occurs.
3asically the bacteria: con-cents are the 'a-ighest at Shoe String Bay.
At Mashpee and ,shoe 3tring Bay the counts are higher in the su=er time
and lower in the winter time. The area is not a heavily developed
region, 30 it is surprising that there is a persistent bacterial content.
Along the Mashpee IUver there are about fifty-six locations that are
discharge areas. There is " lot of road nm off.
Another aspect they looked into was to conduct, a septic leaching survey
along the shoreline areas. 'There were a few locations that there will
be t")-arther inveatigation in this a'eve llopaieht. They were also involved
in taking samples along the river area. 'When it turns orange or red
it is normal.
