MA 02649
RE: Anchor Self Storage•'600 Main Street(Route 130),Mashpee.MHC#RC.27596
Dear Mr. Kirrane:
Thank you for submitting a Project Notification form to the Massachusetts Historical Commission regarding the
proposed project referenced above. Staff of the MHC have reviewed the information you submitted and have the
following comments.
The project area is archaeologically sensitive and is likely to contain archaeological sites associated with the Native
American occupation of the Mashpee area from ancient times to the early twentieth century. The area's archaeological
sensitivity is determined by its favorable environmental characteristics including areas of well-drained soils and
relatively level terrain, proximity to natural features such as water bodies(Mashpee Pond),and cultural features such as
a Native American trail (present-day Route 130)and known areas of settlement. Review of MHC's inventory indicates
that Native American archaeological sites are often found in similar environmental settings. In addition.this general area
was home to many families of the Mashpee Wampanoag community during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and
may contain archaeological sites associated with that historically significant settlement.
MHC requests that the Cape Cod Commission consider requiring that an intensive(locational)archaeological survey(950
CMR 70) be conducted for the proposed self-storage facility. The purpose of the intensive survey is to locate and identify
any historic or archaeological resources that may be affected by the proposed construction. MHC is willing to assist project
proponents in developing a scope for an intensive survey.
These comments are offered to assist in compliance with Massachusetts General Laws,Chapter 9,Sections 26-27C.as
amended by Chapter 254 of the Acts of 1989 (950 0.1"R 70-1, 11 and--`:^-a,;_Cud Commission Act. .Sectinn 12(c)(1).
Please feel free to contact Eric Johnson at this office if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
'rte SVVV-V,.,
Brona Simon
State Archaeologist
Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer
Massachusetts Historical Commission
xc: Cape Cod Commission
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council
Matthew Vanderhoop,THPO.
