s
safety factors are incorporated into both the pole and foundation design. A 1.25 safety factor
means that the pole would have to be subject to 25% more load (than the design load) before
failure would theoretically occur.
The 150-ft monopole will be designed as a "bend-over" pole, with a failure point at
approximately 10-ft from the top of the pole. This means that the remainder of the pole will
be intentionally over-designed in an attempt to limit the fall radius of the pole to about 10-ft.
The pole will be designed with the top 10-ft of pole meeting the design wind velocity. The
bottom 140-ft will be designed strong enough to resist more than the design wind velocity. In
an unlikely catastrophic event that the pole should collapse, the upper part of the pole would
be overstressed first and would buckle. The upper portion of the pole would then swing down
and hang from this level or, at worst, break off resulting in a fall radius of approximately 10-ft,
which should not be of any threat to the other structures and vegetation surrounding the parcel
where the monopole is located. Once the upper portion is no longer upright and catching the
full force of the wind, the stresses in the lower portion of the pole are reduced, making a
further collapse of the pole unlikely.
The pole will be designed by a qualified professional engineer for a wind velocity that meets
the requirements for the area in which it is located. The pole will be properly designed with
all of the applicable safety factors as required by the code. The effects of wind loads on poles
have been determined by wind tunnel testing, and can be accurately predicted.
Communication poles are safe structures with a long history of reliable operation.
Since 1988, Summit Manufacturing, LLC, an ISO 9001 and AISC certified manufacturing
facility, has provided the nation's communication and utility industries with quality
monopoles. Our reputation for superior manufacturing, innovative engineering and dedication
to customer service has made us one of the world's premier suppliers of tubular steel poles.
During this time period, Summit Manufacturing, LLC, has never experienced a failure of a
communication monopole.
We hope this review of Summit Manufacturing's design process has given you a greater
degree of comfort regarding the design capacity inherent in pole structures.
