Report of the <br />Kenneth C. Coombs School <br />Mission Statement: The Kenneth C. Coombs <br />School strives to provide a high quality, individualitied <br />education to equip students with skills and knowledge <br />for the future. This goal shall be achieved through a <br />partnership of educators, families and the community <br />that values cooperation, diversity and creativity in a <br />child -centered, inclusive learning environment. <br />Paul M. Coombs School launched the <br />2018-2019 school year with an enrollment of 408 <br />students and concluded with 418 students. KCC housed <br />1 toddler classroom with 2, 3 and 4 half day sessions, <br />four full -day PK classrooms, six kindergarten, seven <br />grade 1 and five grade 2 classrooms. Paul LaBelle <br />began his third year as building Principal and Scott <br />Shepherd completed his second year fulfilling the <br />duties of the Assistant Principal. <br />The Kenneth C. Coombs School continued to <br />build upon its community partnerships during 2018- <br />2019. The Laurentide Assisted Living facility hosted <br />monthly visits from our classrooms. Students <br />performed skits, sang songs, facilitated seasonal arts <br />and crafts activities and created shared reading <br />experiences. We continued our affiliation with the <br />United States Coast Guard by providing students <br />with STEM centered and hands-on lessons associated <br />with the work of the Coast Guard such as: <br />aerodynamics, friction properties of materials, and <br />communication. CWO Joseph Rohrer and his Coasties <br />led students in hands-on experiences in all of our grade <br />two classrooms. Crewmate Air Force Master Sergeant <br />Matthew Davis also supported our Marathon Monday <br />program by running with students each week and <br />assisted with our annual Field Day. <br />KCC also celebrated its seventh year of the Read <br />to Me Program, a group of retired community <br />members that bring one-to-one reading experiences <br />with our preschool students every Wednesday. This <br />year our volunteers gifted each preschooler with a book <br />of their own on the last day. <br />Our partnership with Southport yielded us many <br />volunteers who assisted in our WIN blocks, library, <br />classrooms and evening family engagement events <br />such as Math Night and the Reading Carnival. <br />Students had opportunities to take several field <br />trips supported by our PTO. Trips were made to the <br />Woods Hole Aquarium, Coonamessett Farm, Joint <br />Base Cape Cod and the Cotuit Center for the Arts. <br />We continued our annual traditions of the Giving <br />Tree, Math Night, STEM Night, and Kindergarten <br />"Here We Come." The Giving Tree helped provide a <br />happy holiday to 38 families. Gifts were received from <br />multiple community members and organizations. We <br />would especially like to thank Stop &, Shop, Roche <br />Brothers, Deer Crossing Realtor Association, the <br />Mashpee Kiwanis, and Cape Cod Church for their <br />support for our needy families. STEM Night continued <br />its participatory format this year. This inquiry -based <br />approach allows kids to ask questions and discover by <br />exploring. Participating scientists came from USDA, <br />NOAA and Mashpee Wildlife Refuge. Grade 2 Arcade <br />Games, with some of the student work, was also on <br />display that night. Grade 1 students showcased their <br />mini -golf course. <br />The KCC PTO supports the Coombs School and <br />its mission, "to provide a strong learning environment <br />and a supportive community" helping with many <br />events, fundraisers and activities throughout the school <br />year and provided materials and resources such as <br />books, playground equipment, and school assemblies <br />all which supported the academic objectives of our <br />curriculum and home/school relationships. In addition, <br />the PTO sponsored very -well attended community <br />.2 <br />
