Toirn
° Great sec .
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—March 28, 2024
Mashpee Historical Commission Meeting was called to order by Ava Costello at
4:15 pm.
Commissioners: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher and Nancy Soderberg. Rosemary
Burns and Joan Tavares-Avant telephoned in. Lenny Pocknett and Brian Hyde were
not present. Alex Mergele, from Mashpee Enterprise, also attended.
Joan: Will check with Ruby Mills to see if Courtney can help us identify a piece of a
gravestone which we have which he removed from a site east of the Quashnet Valley
Country Club many years ago.
Richard: Rob Mills, son of Earl Mills, will donate an1890 North School Desk— gift from
Earl Mills who had refurbished it years ago, and he has decided to donate it to the one-
room schoolhouse. Richard will put it on display in our schoolhouse. Richard will open
the schoolhouse early this spring. He said the DPW has worked on and replaced the
second window.on the side facing the Archives.
Veterans Banner Project: Donations received to date are up to $4,000.00. The cost is
about $3,500.00/year. The Veterans Banner Box is at the Mashpee Public Library, and
up to date we have 28 photos and forms, and we hope to get up to 40. The MCOC is
sending another email blast to thank those who contributed. Richard said he will
continue to collect photos up until end of May, and hoping to get them printed and on
display in August through late November.
Ancient Burial Grounds: The Jones stone has been put in place. He also found an
unidentified stone, and we need to research the broken pieces, and we need to find out
what the correct protocol is to handle them. Two more stones need to be replaced; just
waiting for some better weather. The other stones have been cleaned and the
cemetery is looking much better now that it has been cleaned up and repaired.
Catherine will have the land surveyed, and have the trees inspected to remove some
and trim others.
The Pocknett Cemetery: This cemetery is being surveyed by DPW. The Hicks
Cemetery and the land that was designated as the Lakewood Cemetery were donated
by Earl Marsters, and both are owned by the Town.
