r 'r .,d as , Co m
isloif ° ' i f .
w i rent Neck; Road North
Mashpee, A 02649
* T"eie hone - S S) 5' -1438

MASHI'EE HISTORICAL COMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—May 2, 2024
Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava Costello at
4:15 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello and Richard DeSorgher were present.
Rosemary Burns Love and Joan Tavares-Avant telephoned in. Brian Hyde, Lenny
Pocknett, and Nancy Soderberg were not present. Alex Mergele, from The Enterprise,
also attended. He informed us that he is leaving the Enterprise to work at the Marine
Biological Laboratory, part of WHOI., in Woods Hole. He has attended many of our
meetings and written interesting articles in the Enterprise about our historical projects.
We will miss him, but wish hire well.
Veterans Banner Project is going very well. We had 45 veterans who submitted photos
and copies of their military records, but we can only use 38 of them this year. The
amount of donations from Mashpee Businesses was more than enough ($4250.00) to
cover the costs of this project for this year. We will have a list of contributors on display.
The project will be coming together by mid-June, and we will be installing the banners in
August. They will be up on display until Thanksgiving.
Ancient Burial Grounds: Grafton with Baker Memorial in Falmouth has finished his work
resetting on the stones. D The area has been improved with a nice parking area out
front. Richard met with Catherine on the Amos-Coombs-Avant cemetery which consists
of two burial areas — one owned by the Town and one owned by the Tribe. We agreed
that it should be fenced in as one area.
Attaquin Cemetery has been surveyed. Catherine has suggested that we just fence in
the front of the Cemetery; the back area has already been fenced in with a post and rail
fence by the property owners. The Attaquin-Pocknett Cemetery has the crumbled
stone. David Weeden was going to talk with Bridgewater State to find out what
methods can be used to perhaps identify it or reassemble it.
The new signs for all the cemeteries have been ordered. Catherine will be going out to
bid to ascertain whether or not trees can be trimmed or removed.
