-2-
Nancy reported that Ayesha Shafi has gone back to her studies at MMHS. She and
Richard discussed that there have been fewer visitors to the schoolhouse this year than
last. Richard suggested that they should have a meeting to discuss whether or not to
keep the Schoolhouse open from Labor Day until mid-October due to lack of visitors.
Tim Dorsey came in to attend the meeting. He informed us that he has worked in
construction of various buildings all around Mashpee. He was interested in getting an
old home, built in 1964, on Blue Castle Drive onto the National Register of Historic
Places and wanted to know how to do it. He mentioned that the name of Blue Castle
Drive was chosen because of the Blue Mountains and also a prestigious roadway called
Castle Drive in Jamaica. The home was the home of Mary Ernestine Carr, the nanny
for a Lilly Pharmaceuticals executive. Richard gave him some information as to how to
proceed with the necessary forms to be filed with the MA Secretary of State's office.
Richard talked to us about the second War Memorial, and Committee recently formed,
to honor those veterans who served during the Viet Nam war and up through the
present-day conflicts. He'is working with VHB, the Engineering design firm, the DPW
and the committee members to design and build the new monument. A motion was
proposed by Richard that we fund purchasing fall mums to be placed in front of the new
War Memorial, seconded by Nancy, and it was unanimously approved.
Open House— Richard made a motion that we have our next Open House on October
14th, Indigenous Peoples' Day, it was seconded by Nancy, and it was unanimously
approved. . Ava and Richard are working on the display and theme for the day, and
they have decided to use the research and history of the Mashpee Post Office, and the
book, Mashpee 02649, written by Joanne M. Ferragamo, former Historical Commission
member. We have several interesting portraits done by John Woodruff and photos of
past Mashpee Postmasters that we will have on display. The display will be available
for the public to come in to see after that day for anyone who would like to make an
appointment.
Historical Preservation Award for 2023 — Richard made a motion that we set a date of
Monday, November 18th at 4:30pm for the presentation, it was seconded by Nancy, and
voted unanimously.
The 250th Anniversary of the Revolutionary War-All towns in MA have been requested
to participate. Ava had asked the BOS to form a committee, and they have not done so.
We are planning to have a booklet printed with the research about the 15 Mashpee
soldiers who gave their lives as well as others who had served. This will be worked on
by MMHS students, and a history department teacher, Brian Brody, and our summer
intern Ayesha Shafi, so work is in progress.
