I'm now work with a group
of folks with disabilities. I support the goals of HSC - more mental health services, suicide prevention
(someone just jumped from the bridge), substance use. Life is difficult for people of my age.
Gail: I looked at the center where you work— very impressive. How long have you worked there?
Sam: 5 years in December.
Heidi and Christine thank him for wanting to be part of the committee.
How would prior Board members or colleagues with whom you have worked in the past describe you?
Sam: patience, easy to talk to, timely.
Gail-how did you hear about opening.
Sam: My wife, Christine, is secretary for several town committees, so I follow the town committee
meetings. I looked at committee vacancies and I thought this committee fits my interests/skills. Also I like zoom
meeting but can meet in person if necessary.
Lynne - What challenges or rewards do you see in doing human services work?
Sam: I enjoy the clients - it doesn't feel like work. We were in union negotiations and I looked at salaries
of management. State run organizations in that respect are better than private companies.
Lynne: what union do you belong to?
Sam: SEIU 509
Are you available to attend meetings, which now are held on the third Friday at 11 am by zoom?
Sam: yes. I now work 2 days a week, overnights. That may change to 7a-3p, but with Fridays off.
Gail- our committee has experienced lots of changes, and we've had no one new (in the at-large positions) in
5-7 years, so it's exciting to expand the committee.
Do you have questions for us?
Sam: Gail is the Director, and Heidi is Direcdtor of the COA, what is the make up of the board?
Gail: The committee has 7 members, some are set positions based on job. Heidi is new as the COA Director.
Christine is the Assistant Health Agent representing the Board of Health, and is fairly new. Recreation
Department Director, Mary Bradbury, is also on the committee, and there are three at-large positions, Lynne,
your position, one more that is vacant, and our Select Board member is David Weeden.
Sam: Do you have a budget?
Gail: The current Human Services budget amount is approximately$143,138. We have eleven contracts or
small grants with outside agencies. Many agencies were impacted by COVID - they couldn't stop doing their
jobs but had to find creative ways to meet the needs of residents. New to the budget is a line item for the MIDC
[Mashpee Inclusion & Diversity Committee], which is separate from the overall Human Services budget.
