HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES FRIDAY,APRIL 21, 2023
PRESENT: Lynne Barbee (Chair), Sam MacDonald, Christine Willander, Gail Wilson, Director, Carol Sherman
CALL TO ORDER: 11:02 AM
PUBLIC COMMENT. None
OLD BUSINESS:
Review of Minutes from March
No minutes from March to review. Will review at next meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Update on Opioid Abatement Funding Application
An issue was raised by David Weeden that organizations which would benefit from funding are possibly being
excluded from consideration. By specifying only nonprofit organizations may apply, the school and other potential
recipients are unlikely to be able to benefit this year. Gail noted that this is something that will need to be addressed
moving forward.
Lynn reiterated that there are several groups who can create a curriculum and bring it to the school board to
approve then implement as an outside agency as a workaround. Gail wants to make sure that whatever route is taken,
data is able to be gathered to show the number of Mashpee residents served. Moreover, the school does have programs
in place currently. The language can be changed next year to be more inclusive if there is a lack of applicants.
Gail also spoke about the upcoming Town Meeting where the article will be presented to the town. She
emphasized the importance of the articles passage with the June 1 st application deadline coming up.
Human Services Contracts
We will be reviewing the organizations that we give money to on a regular basis. The organizations the money
supports are; AIDS support group, Big Brother Big Sister, Cape Abilities, Community House Center, Thomas Service
Center, Independence House, Salvation Army, South Coastal Legal Services, Saint Vincent DePaul, the VNA Cape Cod
and Community Health Center. Lynn highlighted the essential role that the Community Health Center plays given that we
are in the middle of and opioid crisis and about to begin processing applications for the opioid settlement money.
Director's Report
Gail wanted to highlight a recent call that she received from the sandwich Empowerment Center. It's an
organization who aims to support military families. Eligible recipients are allowed to have up to 50lbs of goods free of
charge once a week.
ADDITIONAL TOPICS
None
NEXT MEETING SCHEDULE
May 18t", 2023
ADJOURNMENT
Motion to Adjourn by Christine Willander, Seconded by Sam MacDonald
