HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE <br /> MEETING MINUTES <br /> FRIDAY,AUGUST 18, 2023 <br /> 11:00AM ZOOM MEETING <br /> PRESENT: <br /> Carol Sherman, Heidi McLaughlin (Vice-Chair) Mary Bradbury, Christine Willander Lynne Barbee (Chair) <br /> Gail Wilson, Director <br /> Absent: Sam MacDonald (Clerk) <br /> Guest:Alex Megerle (Mashpee Enterprise), Stacey Schakel (presenter) <br /> In the absence of the Clerk, the Chair will take minutes <br /> CALL TO ORDER 11:04 AM <br /> PUBLIC COMMENT— none <br /> OLD BUSINESS <br /> Review of Minutes from June 16, 2023 <br /> Review of Minutes from July 21, 2023 <br /> Review of both Minutes postposed until September 15 <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> Guest-Stacey Schakel, Vaping Presentation <br /> Stacey is the Mashpee School District Nurse Coordinator, based at Coombs School, and a <br /> member of the Substance Use Task Force. In the past, vaping was a concern among youth/student due to <br /> nicotine, but now much of the vaping contains THC. Stacey researched the available edibles as well, and <br /> demonstrated how similar THC-ladened edibles look like candy and other common snacks. There is a concern <br /> about educating parents and the community to recognize edibles. Flavor vapes can still be purchased outside <br /> the State of MA; the "inhalers" do not emit smoke, so are more easily hidden. Vodka is the alcohol of <br /> preference as it is less noticeable.. Xylozine, the new street drug, does not respond to Narcan, which has led <br /> to more overdoses. Energy drinks are popular, most contain high amounts of caffeine. <br /> Christine asked if the police can check school lockers (there are two SROs), with dogs? <br /> Mary asked what the police or staff do if they find items in the possession of student? <br /> Update on Opioid Abatement Funding <br /> Gail reports that previously approved proposals now havwe signed contracts and monies havew <br /> been disbursed. The committee requests a copy of a sample contract. <br /> As per the committee's request, the Boys and Girls Club submitted a new, more detailed <br /> proposal. Discussion of this proposal. Motion to approve this proposal by Carol Sherman, second by <br /> Christine Willander. Votes: Sherman yes, Willander yes, Bradbury yes, Barbee yes, McLaughlin abstain. <br /> Update on Human Services Contracts <br /> review and discussion postponed until September 15. <br /> Director's Report <br /> The Mashpee Substance Use Task Force has met.August 31 is Overdose Awareness Day. <br /> ADDITIONAL TOPICS <br /> This space is reserved for topics that the Chair did not reasonably anticipate would be discussed. <br /> MEETING SCHEDULE -September 15, 2023, 11 am by zoom <br /> ADJOURNMENT 12:16 pm <br />
