Waquoit Bay surveyed.

New Business – Waquoit Bay closure to protect abundant quahog seed?
Extremely high numbers of quahog larvae observed in Waquoit Bay in 2009 have
set and grown resulting in abundant large quahog seed and littlenecks in
Waquoit Bay in 2011. A management closure of shellfishing during the cold
months would help protect the seed from predation by waterfowl. When it is cold,
the quahogs do not dig back into the sand after being raked up. There are at
least 10 types of sea ducks that eat shellfish. Whole mussel beds have been
wiped out by birds in the winter in Chatham. Falmouth has a management
closure of their side of Waquoit Bay from November 15 through April 30. Motion
by Holmes: Recommend to the Board of Selectmen that Waquoit Bay be closed
to shellfishing except scalloping from November 15 through April 30 to protect
abundant quahog seed. Second: Thomas. Vote: unanimous in favor.

Agenda items for future meetings -None

08:10 hrs. York: Motion to adjourn. Holmes: second. Vote: Unanimous in favor.

Respectfully submitted,

Richard York
Shellfish Commission Secretary
