Comprehensive P l a n z o z z <br /> (DRAFT 03/18/22) <br /> • Surface Water <br /> • Groundwater <br /> In addition, this chapter identifies threats to natural resources for the Town of Mashpee to consider <br /> future actions to mitigate and protect these important assets. <br /> 4.2.1 Landscape and Scenic Resources <br /> Mashpee has many scenic resources which include water views and conservation areas such as the <br /> Mashpee River, the Popponesset Spit, and Nantucket Sound (Mashpee Environmental Coalition, n.d.). <br /> Other areas of interest include: <br /> • Jehu Pond Park <br /> • Lopez Conservation Area <br /> • Lowell Holly Reservation <br /> • Mashpee River Woodlands <br /> • South Mashpee Pine Barrens <br /> • South Cape Beach Area <br /> • Santuit Preserve <br /> Mashpee also has numerous trails that provide opportunities for scenic viewing and is a significant <br /> resource of ecological assets(Mashpee Environmental Coalition, n.d.).The Waquoit Bay is designated as <br /> an Area of Critical Environmental Concern by the Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental <br /> Affairs (EEA) for having the quality, uniqueness, and significance of natural and cultural resources <br /> (MassGIS, 2009). <br /> Further information is needed in this section regarding landscape and scenic resources. We will gather <br /> this information through stakeholder interviews. <br /> 4.2.2 Shoreline <br /> Mashpee has over five miles of coastline along Nantucket Sound and Vineyard Sound. The town's <br /> shoreline is farmed by large coastal embayments:Waquoit Bay to the west and Popponesset Bay to the <br /> east.Waquoit Bay and Popponesset Bay include several small rivers, brooks,and small ponds in the area. <br /> The majority of Mashpee's shoreline has been claimed by development, including houses,Town beaches, <br /> and summer camps. Information regarding development by the Popponsesset Corporation and the New <br /> Seabury Resort is detailed in the Land Use Chapter. The Mashpee River Reservation,which empties into <br /> Popponesset Bay, remains in good quality(The Trustees of Reservations). Further information on water <br /> quality is detailed underthe Surface Water section of this chapter. <br /> 4.2.3 Flood Zones <br /> Flood zones are those areas subject to temporary inundation during storm events or seasonal increases <br /> in rainfall or snowmelt. Flood zones are defined as areas with a 1%chance of flooding in any given year. <br /> These zones play an important role in naturally protecting a community from flood damage. Flood zones <br /> are commonly associated with water bodies and are designated and mapped by the Federal Emergency <br /> Management Agency (FEMA) by category. Flooding in Mashpee is the result of coastal storms, <br /> nor'easters, heavy rains, tropical storms, and hurricanes.
