MA.SHPEE LIBRARY COMMISSION
MINUTES
MONDAY, JULY 9 , 1990
PAGE FOUR
VI NEW BUSINESS :
Rod Nagel , program director of Continental Cable mentioned that he
would be doing programming this fall, and asked if we knew about
the arts and entertainment network program. He said that they very
often donate things to libraries . Before we knew it, he had approached
them, and we will be getting a 20 inch color TV monitor, a VCR, 6 video
cassettes with classic-type titles, and 5 books to go with it. This
gift has a list price of about $2,500. It will be arriving sometime
next month, and we will probably have some type of presentation when
it arrives .
The videos we will add to our collection, and also the books . The
equipment will be put into the closet next to the other TV.
The Cable Company also showed up to start wiring the building. Ap-
parently this is part of a package deal for the town. They have
hooked up to the outside of the building, and they are going to come
the meeting room. Y Panel, UP over the ceiling, and into
Helene also stated that she has had some requests for summer story hour
which she will not be doing. With all that they have to do here at the
library, there was no way that they could do that. She has arranged
for some outside performers to come in. They will be there on Wed-
nesday morning. They are going to have fantasy puppets July. Father Tosti has offered the use of the parishhalleifnweowere
anticipating a larger crowd, so we do have that option. We will have
a storyteller from the Waldorf School sometime in August. We have a
volunteer who is going to do a junior great books discussion
for 2nd and 3rd graders in July and August. Hopefully that willusatis-
fy the request for programs . That is all we will be able to do with
the volume of business.
A. Tanneyhill asked Helene what the problem was with library volunteers .
Helene stated that it's just been so busy. As long as those who say
they will come, do come, but as soon as one gets sick, it' s been bru-
tal. A. Tanneyhill wondered if there were anything the trustees could
do to help solicit additional volunteers.
Helene stated that basically we were just too busy for the amount of
staff that we have, and we need more help. As far as volunteers , it
has to do with what they can do. I cannot ask a volunteer to catalog
books or overdue's . Those things back up when you get really busy and
the staff has to pitch in and do the normal checking out, etc.
Helene further added that the year the library opened (1987) we did
21, 000 in round numbers , and this year we did 45,000 , without any ad-
ditional staff.
