MINUTES July 29, 1993 4 BOARD OF HEALTH
USGS's mapped, in an academic kind of investigation. " 1160' to
80' deep is where the aquifer of Cape Cod meets the marine
waters of Nantucket Sound and some places where you have a
pumping well near that interface you can get salt water in-
trusion. " "This is because you are in the area where the
flow from fresh water meets the area where salt water has in-
truded because of the pressure of the water. " "The two mix
and there's diffusion both ways. " "This is occuring 100'
down. " "Flat Pond is 4' deep and has no bearing on its
j flusing characteristics." "We mapped the recharge area and
figured out the major components of the hydrologic budget. "
Mr. Worden stated, "The shallow nature of the pond, the
very low gradient of the water table and setback distance of
the proposed development from the pond give us factors which
combine to give us an extremely safe buffer and leads me and
my colleagues to believe there would be absolutely no impact
on Flat Pond. "
Mr. McQuaid questioned Mr. Worden as to the distance a
leaching facility must be to go under the pond based on your
vertical flow rate.
Mr. Worden responded, "The septic system must be .014'
for the effluent to go under the pond. "
Mr. McQuaid questioned the hydrogeologists calculations.
This matter was continued pending a site visit scheduled
for Saturday and further hydrogeological calculations. - ..
• t
FOR DISCUSSION
JOHN'S POND - Mr. McQuaid relayed, "We received round two of
the surface water sampling results for John's Pond, (Brick-
yard Road beach) , which was tested for pseudomonas and
streptococcus. " "Those results dropped to within recommended
levels however, the Briarwood beach, which was not initially
sampled but was on this second round, has elevated counts of
pseudomonas and streptococcus. " "What we will have available
by tomorrow afternoon is round three of the sampling
results. " "At the Selectmen's request the County will also
perform pseudomonas and streptococcus sampling on Ashumet,
Santuit and Mashpee-Wakeby ponds." "Those results will be
available tomorrow afternoon also. "-
Mr. McQuaid relayed, "The most recent v.o.c. testing at
John's pond revealed toluene at 0.8 p.p.b. . " "The drinking
water standards for toluene is 340 p.p.b. . " ' "Toluene was
found at the Briarwood beach area at 0.8 p.p.b. , the beach at
Brickyard Road at 0 .9. p.p.b. and the public beach at 0 .8
