1
MINUTES September 16, 1993 5 BOARD OF HEALTH
significant risk for the amount of exposure you would get
from swimming. " "We cannot even measure these compounds in
the pond because of other factors going on, mixing and dilu-
tion with the whole volume of the pond and also volatiliza-
tion off the surface of the pond takes those compounds out of
the water. " "It is a problem with these concentrations in
the drinking water. "
Mr. Kinney stated, "For the two years or so that the Na-
tion Guard since provided bottled water to the people who did
plug in then they were still at risk because they were using
their showers and watering their lawns, etc. . " "So the Nation
Guard Bureau basically let the risk continue for two years
without dealing with the whole problem. "
Mr. Begley relayed, "Bottled water was provided by
D.E.P. not by the National Guard Bureau. " "It was the best
alternative at the time to reduce the exposure by providing
bottled water. " "It was understood that there is still a
certain amount of exposure and actions were being taken to
develop a public water system to eliminate that risk as
well . " "We are at that point where we now have a public wa-
ter system and we really need to utilize it to end this part
of the problem. "
Mr. Begley commented, "It does take time to develop a
municipal water system. " "That has been done and is now in
place. "
Mr. Greelish stated, "We are talking about a long term
health hazard. " "We have, from the Military's data, gotten a
very good handle on exactly where the plumes are. "Virtually •
every one of the subject homes could potentially draw from
the existing plumes because they are there, underneath. "
"This Board had established a moratorium area to try to
minimize health risks when the information we had at hand in-
dicated there was a potential problem. " "Now there is no
question. "
A resident of Briarwood questioned what steps the Board
is taking to monitor those residents that have not hooked up
to town water.
Mr. Greelish stated, "There is nothing to be gained by
testing the water because of the pulsing potential and be-
cause there is pollution beneath all of those wells. " "There
is no question it is there. " "Whether that particular
homeowner is drawing contaminated water at a given time we
don't know but the potential is definitely there. " "It
