th
Ms. Mahoney reflected on the day the library opened its doors on April 16 and the cost at the
time was $8 Million. With Phase 2 of sewer projected at $96 Million, she is struck at how much
it would cost now and how she appreciates that the building was built when it was.

The Children’s Room has been busy. They are going in on a grant for play spaces. A lot of kids
will be coming during summer and summer programming. The YMCA is hopeful for the summer
lunch program this year.

Yvette Shakespeare with Friends has been in contact with Ms. Mahoney, the pergola is still a
piece of discussion. Ms. Shakespeare will be visiting and mapping things out and she is looking
forward to figuring out the next Books in Bloom event.

The DPW Director has been in contact, we are determined to make the circulation desk work.
The plan for opening more hours has been tweaked. We will have 50 hours by October 1, 2024.
April 1, 2024 we want to change the hours to: Mon, Wed, Fri, and Saturday open at 9:00a.m.
instead of 10:00a.m. That will put us up to 48 hours. Wednesday we will probably stay open
until 7:00p.m. We have a population that will appreciate the early hours. She wants to meet 50
hours by the deadline. We have to be open at least 2 nights a week, at least two hours after
5:00p.m., which we have for Tuesday and Thursday. Lastly, two hours will need to be added
somewhere.

MOTION:
Ms. Macdonald made a motion to approve the April 1, 2024 start date for opening the
library Monday, Wednesday, Fridays, & Saturdays from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m., to bring the
library up to 48 hours a week. Seconded by Ms. Nickerson. All in favor.

Roll Call Vote:
Ann Macdonald – Yes Kate Milde – Yes
Joan Lyons – Yes Beth Geatrakas – Yes
Ruth Nickerson – Yes Mary LeClair – Yes
Sandi Lahart – Yes

Ms. Lyons asked how busy the library is on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m.
Ms. Mahoney responded there are some programs and meetings, people are here studying.
Compared to daytime, it’s not as busy as evening hours. Ms. Lyons is more partial to the earlier
hours. Adding more hours for students gives the library a broader range of services. New books
come out on Tuesdays.

Comparing Mashpee circulation to other towns:
Falmouth - 190,000
Mashpee- 135,800
4
