3
-17
Town of Mashpee Department of Pu6Cic .`1Norks
350 Meetingfwuse Road
Mashpee, Massachusetts 02649
s
-
7efephone-(508)539-1420
Fax-(508)539 3894
MEMORANDUM
January 3, 2007
TO: Board of Selectmen
Joyce Mason, Town Manager
FROM: Catherine Laurent, Assistant Director
SUBJECT: Proposed Walking Trail on Mashpee Neck Road
The DPW is proposing to construct a walking trail along the west side of Mashpee Neck Road
from Clippership Village to Pirate's Cove. This proposal is in response to a request from
several residents in the area for an off-road path to safely accommodate pedestrians walking on
Mashpee Neck Road.
The dirt trail would be 4 feet wide and would be located a minimum of 6 feet from the edge of
the road (the minimum separation required between a sidewalk and a road if no curbing or
barrier is provided).' The trail-would parallel the road, :meandering as necessary to avoid utility
poles and removal of any trees of significant size or because of topography. It will be located
within the right-of-way for Mashpee Neck Road, though it may be necessary to encroach
minimally onto conservation land (Mashpce Woodlands) in certain areas for the reasons stated
above.
I have reviewed the proposal with Steve Solbo, Conservation Agent. He has administratively
approved any possible encroachment of the trail onto conservation land. A trail is considered
passive recreation which is an allowable use on conservation land. Furthermore, the trail will
provided linkage to the existing trails in the Mashpee Woodlands.
All work will be performed by the DPW. As stated above, the trail will be unpaved, requiring
minimal maintenance (occasional trinuning of vegetation). No residences will be impacted by
the construction of the trail.
A plan showing the proposed trail is attached hereto.
