4
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
April 2, 2007
With regards to water quality and enforcement of the Clean Water Act, it
was noted a tribe can be delegated to enforce water quality at minimum to
strict federal standards.
A tribe has the ability to enter into inter-municipal agreements with a
town. Cooperative agreements could include the joint operation of a 911
response system and fire protection services. Inter-municipal agreements
generally do not have to be approved by the Department of the Interior.
In the event the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council receives
federal recognition on May 23, 2001,there will be no change on May 24,
2007 until the lands-are taken into federal trust. However, the tribe can
begin the process to obtain federal funding.
The Board of Selectmen agreed to keep the lines of communication open
with the Tribal Council. To date, there is a good working relationship
between the two entities that is hopeful to continue in the future.
Adiournment:
Motion made by Selectman Cahalane to adjourn at 7:12 p.m.
Motion seconded by Selectman Cook.
VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathleen M. Soares
Secretary to the Board of Selectmen
I
