15
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
July 22, 2002
Meeting re-convened: 7:31 p.m.
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Mg hpee Dredging Project:
Members of the Waterways Commission were present with Leslie Fields,
Coastal Geologist of the Woods Hole Group to provide a status report to
the Selectmen regarding the Mashpee River dredging project.
Cost estimates were developed for four(4) different scenarios. It was
noted that a number of challenging issues have developed throughout the
course of the project, specifically centered around dewatering and disposal
of fine-grained dredge material.
The original project as described in scenario 1 proposes to dredge the
entire 5,052 of river. The project would be phased over a two year period.
Sediments would be trucked to the Bourne landfill. During the entire
project, the existing parking at Ockway Bay would be inaccessible to the
public. The estimated cost for scenario 1 is $1,702,751.
In scenario 2, dredging operations would occur in the lower 3,600 of river
over a period of 1 to 1.5 months. The public landing at Ockway Bay
would be inaccessible to the public for approximately 6 to 7 months.
Upon completion of the estimated $481,580 project, the public landing
would be revegetated and the parking lot would be restored.
Dredging of the lower 750 feet of river in scenario 3 would take place in a
1 to 2 week period. The parking lot at Ockway Bay would be inaccessible
to the public for approximately 5.5 to 6 months. The landing would be
revegetated and the parking lot would be restored. The estimated cost is
$275,000/
Scenario 4 represents no action. Newly presented scenario 5 would
investigate offshore disposal options with Buzzards Bay and Vineyard and
Nantucket Sounds. Additional cost assumptions would be considered.
It was noted that the Ockway Bay site has not yet been permitted. An in-
depth discussion followed with respect to accessibility and site elevations.
