4
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
August 12, 2002
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
Dredging Project: (continued)
Mr. Fitzsimmons indicated that if the Waterways Commission would
pursue the process, it would be necessary to file a.notice of intent.
The matter was opened to solicit public comment.
Jim McKay stated that taxpayers would be more than happy to fund
recreational facilities along the river. Mr. McKay indicated that he knew
Mr. Stenberg and that he was aware of intentions to dredge the river. It
was noted that the land is a large 2 to 3 acre kettle hole that could be used
for dredge spoils.
Rob Flemming, Pirates Cove indicated that dredging would improve the
overall health of the river. He noted that the spoils are organic and would
settle and dry for plant* in the short term.
Ed Baker,Pirates Cove stated that the use of the Stenber parcel would
g
solve a major problem in the Town of Mashpee. It would.create an area
for public access to salt water and solve a financial challenge in the cost to
dredge the river. The project would benefit the taxpayers of the Town and
the dredge spoils would allow the land to be shaped to create picnic areas
and adequate parking for small kayaks and canoes.
It was noted that the data for Scenario #5,.offshore disposal has not yet
been attained for comparison.
Robert Sherman, Conservation Agent indicated that appropriate use of the
land is passive recreation. For extensive recreational use, there would be
major re-grading. In his opinion, the EOEA would not consider this
appropriate use. Mr. Sherman added that clearing 5 acres of trees is not
low recreational use.
Beverly Kane, Compass Drive stated that the river is dying. She
recommended that the issue go before the voters to let the people decide.
Waterways Commission member Jerry Daley recommended that the word
"conversion"be avoided. To place the disposed dredge materials on the
property and to tie this in with a proposed recreation area is a possibility.
