8
Board of Selectmen
Minutes
November 18, 2002
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS:
i
Mashpee River Dredge Update:
Jim Hanks, Waterways Commission Chairman was present to update the
Board on dredge disposal alternatives presently under investigation. It
was noted that the Waterways Commission has been holding informal
discussions with the Conservation Commission on this matter.
To date, off-shore disposal and the creation of marsh or islands are the
most favored options. The off-shore option would require mechanical
(clamshell) dredging and ocean going barges. The ocean going barges are
6 to 8' draft. Popponesset Bay is approximately 5' draft. Shallow draft
options are being considered.
In the marsh/islands concept, de-watering pond(s) would be built in the
river or bay. The pill, settle and drain sequence would be performed until
the material is above the mean high water line. As it compacts in time the
marsh would be encouraged to vegetate.
It was noted that upland disposal alternatives were also addressed with the
Conservation Commission.
Mr. Hanks indicated that his committee will continue investigatations to
identify the most feasible alternative to the Mashpee River dredge project.
Ad
iournment:
Motion made by Selectman Cahalane to adjourn at 7:55 p.m.
The Board will enter into Executive Session at this time for the
purpose of discussing collective bargaining.
