Finance Committee Minutes
March 5, 1991
EXECUTIVE SESSION
The police contract was close to settlement, however, the Selectmen have
now decided not to pay retroactive pay - on a unanimous vote. Jim noted that
this may be illegal. It appears that the Selectmen have taken an indefensible
position. The reason the contract was not settled last year was because the
town brought action to separate patrolmen from the superior officers. The
union could not negotiate. Kevin Harrington has been trying to get some
consistency in the contracts and have them settle all around the same time.
The police were willing to take a wage freeze for next year. Jim noted that
this contract will not be settled, and the Finance Committee had recommended
a $20,000 cut to the Legal & Engineering Account. The police have been
working without a contract for 18 months. Selectmen are willing to agree
to a three-year contract but no retroactive pay. The town dragged their
feet and that's why contract was not settled. Toe- ba—al- Gi the SP3Antmen S
r
r
