tiW
Finance Committee Minutes
March 12, 1991
Page 3.
June Daly the Animal Control Officer joined the meeting to address her
budget. The Finance Committee has recommended that June's position be made
a 4/5 position. June stated that if this were a 4-day a week position, on
Thursday -evenings she would park the vehicle at the Police Station and they
will have to handle the calls. She will not be available for emergency-
calls as she is now. John Ferriday complemented June stating that she was
a unique person who had the ability to get peaceful solutions. He praised
her dedication and her ability to work with both animals and people.
Selectman Hanson was present and he also stated that June was a dedicated
employee and the impact of this reduction will only be known when she isn't
available. Chairman Vaccaro concurred with them both noting that she
had talent, but cuts .:_had.--to be made and he was hopeful that she would return to
full-time when the economy turned around.
Deirdre Greelish stated that there are people in town who have 40-hour
per week positions but are really giving the town a lot more. These
individuals are not being recognized and as in June's case her budget has
been cut. Deirdre questioned whether the impact of these instances will be
greater than the town c an a b o s o r b. She stressed to a dedicated person
like June it is more than a job. She urged the Finance Committee not to
lose sight of this.
Bob Connell Director of the Council on Aging joined the meeting to
discuss the Council's budget. He distributed a fact sheet for the Committee's
consideration.
• The Council's current operating budget contains
$5500 which had to be raised by the Council to meet
FY91 operating expenses.
• Of the four positions at the Senior Center only two
are town funded.
• The senior citizen population is increasing in Mashpee
and'so is the need for services.
• The Council's budget is .0003% of the town's total budget.
• All of their capital purchases have been paid for by
donations.
Bob asked the Committee to consider restoring $8,000 to his budget to make the
bottom line $56,895. He stated that it would be difficult to absorb the cuts.
The impact of the reduction to the Council's budget will be in personnel:
The hours of the two people will have to be reduced. He noted that there
are about 100 volunteers providing services to the center. The Senior Center
is open from 8:30 to 4:30 five days a week and other town groups may use
the facility. A donation is requested from these groups. Bob urged the
Committee to restore $8,000 to this budget.
The next Finance Committee meeting is March 14, 1991 at 6:30 .p.m.
The following are scheduled to meet with the Committee on the 14th.
6:45 p.m. Treasurer/Tax Collector
7:15 p.m. Harbormaster
7:45 p.m. DPW
8:15 p.m..
