This local government has been placed in an untenable position.
We are five part-time selectmen inexperienced in the legal, economic and social impacts of our potential decisions.
We have minimal financial resources and have agreed not to employ political advisors or lobbyist. We are effectively
isolated and without resources. Members of this board have families, businesses and lives that also must receive
attention. While we are so preoccupied by this time-consuming process the daily affairs of the town cannot be given
the time and effort they deserve. Can we do this?? Maybe yes, with appropriate legal, financial and advisory
resources. The question is---should we?? It seems to me that this negotiating process is in itself an act of
recognition.
The Tribal counsel has repeatedly informed us that formal recognition by the BIA could be forthcoming at any time.
They have also informed us that they would discuss critical issues to the town when this happens. It has become
abundantly clear to me that the course of action this board should pursue,is to preserve the tax dollars of the town
by allowing the Dept. of The interior(BIA)to resolve this situation.
Finally I would like to thank Mr. Green for his sincerity and efforts over the last months.
David L.
