09/28/1998 14: 29 761-235-8888 CHATHAM ASSOCIATES PAGE 02
leave the road at Pickerel Cove just as it is. The federal government has
recognized the need for more untouched land in its effort to establish a Wildlife
Refuge in the Mashpee area. With all due respect to the petitioners in this case,
my mother believes that we should put these interests ahead of others that may
motivate us at this moment, For all those people who state that there are
portions of the road that are difficult to navigate, let those portions be improved,
but only as a dirt road. For, once the road is paved, there will be no turning
back. The simplicity of the area will be gone forever. More traffic will find its
way down the road. Notably, the Town of Mashpee and all of its residents will
benefit from the existence of some private, rustic areas like that at Pickerel
Cove. My mother believes that we should all stand up and speak for the
environment and for the privacy and simplicity people so crave today_
My mother is also concerned about the cost of such an undertaking. The
people who live along the toad by and large are not wealthy people, and yet the
costs that we have heard mentioned for paving the road are huge. Once again,
everyone who bought into this area over the years knew what type of property
they were buying. It seems unfair now that some who can perhaps afford to
spend a good deal of money for paving would, by their actions, force others into
this burdensome position.
For these reasons, my mother respectfully asks that you consider leaving
Pickerel Cove Road as it is now. She very much appreciates your taking this
view into consideration. If you care to talk with her or any family member further,
please feel free to contact us at the address above, or at 781-235-3131.
Vile very much appreciate the opportunity to be heard on this matter.
Once again, we hope that you will be able to notify us directly about future
discussions of this issue so that, with advance notice, we could plan to attend
the meetings and lend our perspective to the deliberations.
'ncerely your
Susan Kagan Lang
For Dorothy G.
