Dudley Thomas continued
Some of the critical points raised were the following:
• Mr. Thomas pointed out that sodium peroxide reacts violently with water and he pointed out it
must be handled very carefully. He would use 35-lbs. per day;would store 500 pounds at the site;
and thinks he'd get delivery every 2 weeks. Charlie Maintanis said that since it causes heat, it
would be considered Class 3. Mr. Thomas said there would have to be a big sign to warn Fire
Department that water cannot be used near this chemical.
• Sheldon asked whether or not they have a Fire Protection Engineer. Mr. Thomas responded he has
hired one. Sheldon said a code analysis would have to be done. All electrical appliances, outlets,
light switches etc, would have to be explosion proof. All adjacent units of the building would
have to have sprinklers. Sheldon added that he would feel much more comfortable if they took
over the entire building because there is no control over what others doing and this is in the middle
of the building. Mr. Thomas said he would check this out.
• Site abuts up to Town recreational area_
• Chief Baker pointed out that thresholds of combustible liquids might need license from the
Selectmen. Chief Baker said he recommends informing the Board of Selectmen since it is
flammable/combustible materials. Chief Baker also said this may be something that should be
discussed with the Water Department.
• Chief Baker said he would lean on the Fire Protection Engineer and the Military Reservation
inspectors for feedback on fire suppression systems. Also, under the Hazard clauses there may be
requirements that are to be met. Chief Baker added that we may want to bring in a consultant who
specializes in chemical fires to make sure process is done safely, Chief Baker pointed out that this
is not a safe process, but it can be done safely.
• Glen Harrington asked for MSDS for all process. Mr. Thomas said he could supply this.
• Chief Baker stated we have to be aware of off-gas issues.
• Tom Fudala advised that this request requires ZBA public hearing for the project for special
permit modification, but they should have the plans together for the hearing.
• Glen Harrington noted that the Board of Health sets limits on storage of hazardous materials. Fire
Department also sets standards for storage of materials. Sheldon added that is where the Fire
Protection Engineer could provide data for us as well.
• Glen said they should have protection from something backing into the tanks. Mr.Thomas will
ask the architect to do this.
• Bob Nelson advised that ZBA will not approve anything unless they get approvals from the Fire
Department and the Board of Health.
• Will Transfer Station permit dumping this waste at the site?
Conclusions:
• Perhaps joint meeting with Board of Health,Fire,ZBA,Selectmen should be considered?
• At least one more meeting with this Committee needed.
• If Fire Protection Engineer gives a comprehensive presentation then that can move things
along quicker.
Aggroval of Minutes...The Minutes of October 25,2007 were approved.
Me g adjourned at 10:26 a.m.
7
Giliberti
ecording Secretary
