Para. 6. Piers for Girders. 1. First floor girders must <br /> rest on solid masonry or cement filled steel columns. 2. On j <br /> block foundations, cells of blocks below girder must be filled <br /> with cement to form solid bearing, or 3. Masonry pilasters <br /> not less than four inches by eight inches shall be built to <br /> receive girder ends, or cement filled steel columns may be i. <br /> used. <br /> Para. 7. All areas under buildings must be accessible <br /> with a minimum clearance of 20 inches and be ventilated in <br /> two exterior walls. <br /> Para. 8. No wooden structural member shall be closer <br /> than one inch to the chimney, and whenever wooden forms <br /> or supports -are used in the construction of chimneys or fire- <br /> places, they shall be removed within two weeks after masonry <br /> Is laid. I <br /> Para. 9. Sizingand spacing of 1 <br /> p g girders shall be in ac- <br /> cordance with Tables I, II, III, and IV appended. <br /> Para. 10. Wood Floor Joists. 1. Where joists frame in- j <br /> to side of wood girders, metal hangers or a bearing strip f <br /> spiked to the girder must be used. 2. Floor joists framed into <br /> masonry walls shall have at least a four inch bearing and a <br /> three inch fire" bevel cut. 3. Floor joists shall be doubled <br /> under all partitions running parallel to the floor joists. 4. <br /> All headers over four feet long shall be doubled. 5. Floor <br /> joists shall be cross bridged when span exceeds eight feet. <br /> At least one by three inch or stronger stock shall be used. <br /> Para. 11. Wood Rafters. 1. Truss construction may be <br /> used provided it is of a strength comparable with Table IV <br /> and is approved by the Building Inspector. 2. Collar ties not <br /> less than 2 x 4 or 1 x 6 inches shall be used for all sloping <br /> rafters. <br /> Para. 12. Exterior Wall Studs. 1. Studs shall not be <br /> less than two inches by four inches placed not more than <br /> sixteen inches on center. 2. Headers over all openings, shall <br /> be doubled and shall be at least the following: (a) up to 3'- <br /> 2 2 x 4's. (b) 3' to 51/z—2 2 x 6's on edge. (c) 51/2' to T-2 C <br /> 2 x 8's on edge.
