Para. 2. This code shall not apply to: 1. Buildings for <br /> i which a Commonwealth of Massachusetts permit is required. <br /> 2. Buildings or structures owned by'the United States or the <br /> Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 3. Bridges, quays, wharves. <br /> 4. Farm buildings or structures not in either case used as <br /> III dwellings and located more than 100 feet away from any <br /> dwelling, if approved by the Building Inspector. 5. Ordinary <br /> 1 repairs to buildings, providing such repairs do not include <br /> the removal -of walls which tend to weaken the.building. <br /> I <br /> Section 2. Applications. Applications for building per- <br /> mits shall be accompanied by'a plan of the lot showing the <br /> ri l dimensions of the lot and the location and size of the build- <br /> ing or buildings to be erected, together with location of eess- <br /> �' pool or septic •tank and water supplies. A record of such <br /> 3 applications and plans shall be kept on file In the office <br /> j of the Building Inspector. <br /> Section 3. General Provisions Applicable to all Buildings <br /> { Para. 1. All wooden construction in buildings hereafter <br /> erected shall be built with sills, posts, studs and plates <br /> properly braced and framed so as to develop the minimum <br /> strength -and rigidity consistent with the purpose for which <br /> they are to be used. <br /> 41 <br /> a t;; Para. 2. All materials used shall.be of sufficient strength <br /> and size to safely carry the loads they may be subjected to <br /> j ! without exceeding the allowable working strength. 1. All <br /> lumber and timber used in load bearing members shall be <br /> Ei sound, free from rot .and large or loose knots and damaged <br /> diagonal or spiral grain; and shall be at least equal in quality <br /> j} to the following commercial grades: studs, posts, planks, <br /> I beams, joists and rafters, No. 2 Common; and girders and <br /> timbers No. 1 Common. <br /> nominal sizes. All lumber sizes herein specified are <br /> Para. 3. Excavation. 1. All excavations shall extend to <br /> !u� solid ground. 2. All excavations shall extend at least 18 <br /> below the finished grade. <br /> Para. 4. Footings. 1. All footings when footings are <br /> necessary, must be masonry. 2. Minimum footings shall be <br /> as follows: (a) Under foundations of one story buildings, <br /> six inches thick,. and a three inch projection on either side <br /> of the wall. (b) Under•foundations of one and a half, and <br /> not more than two story buildings, eight inches thick and <br /> four inch projection on either side -of the wall. (c) Under a <br /> twelve inch thick wall, eight inches.thick. <br /> � (e) All-chimneys, <br /> must extend to solid ground and have footings which pro- <br /> ject§ !at least six inc <br /> hes on all sides and are at least eight <br />` inches thick. (f) All footings shall be of such width ,anal <br /> � ' 23 <br /> r. <br />
