Para. 2. This code shall not apply to: 1. Buildings for i which a Commonwealth of Massachusetts permit is required. 2. Buildings or structures owned by'the United States or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 3. Bridges, quays, wharves. 4. Farm buildings or structures not in either case used as III dwellings and located more than 100 feet away from any dwelling, if approved by the Building Inspector. 5. Ordinary 1 repairs to buildings, providing such repairs do not include the removal -of walls which tend to weaken the.building. I Section 2. Applications. Applications for building per- mits shall be accompanied by'a plan of the lot showing the ri l dimensions of the lot and the location and size of the build- ing or buildings to be erected, together with location of eess- �' pool or septic •tank and water supplies. A record of such 3 applications and plans shall be kept on file In the office j of the Building Inspector. Section 3. General Provisions Applicable to all Buildings { Para. 1. All wooden construction in buildings hereafter erected shall be built with sills, posts, studs and plates properly braced and framed so as to develop the minimum strength -and rigidity consistent with the purpose for which they are to be used. 41 a t;; Para. 2. All materials used shall.be of sufficient strength and size to safely carry the loads they may be subjected to j ! without exceeding the allowable working strength. 1. All lumber and timber used in load bearing members shall be Ei sound, free from rot .and large or loose knots and damaged diagonal or spiral grain; and shall be at least equal in quality j} to the following commercial grades: studs, posts, planks, I beams, joists and rafters, No. 2 Common; and girders and timbers No. 1 Common. nominal sizes. All lumber sizes herein specified are Para. 3. Excavation. 1. All excavations shall extend to !u� solid ground. 2. All excavations shall extend at least 18 below the finished grade. Para. 4. Footings. 1. All footings when footings are necessary, must be masonry. 2. Minimum footings shall be as follows: (a) Under foundations of one story buildings, six inches thick,. and a three inch projection on either side of the wall. (b) Under•foundations of one and a half, and not more than two story buildings, eight inches thick and four inch projection on either side -of the wall. (c) Under a twelve inch thick wall, eight inches.thick. � (e) All-chimneys, must extend to solid ground and have footings which pro- ject§ !at least six inc hes on all sides and are at least eight ` inches thick.
