Target-specific aquatic herbicides approved by DEP for Commonwealth freshwaters <br />bodies will be used <br /> Herbicides have limited shelf life in water and proper dosage calculated based on target <br />areas <br /> 2022 survey needs updating before treatment begins to assess current spread of invasive <br />species <br /> <br />Environmental Impact & Urgency <br /> Santuit Pond average depth of 6 ft make it ideal candidate for complete milfoil inundation <br />if left untreated <br /> Milfoil spreads aggressively and can take over entire water bodies regardless of size <br /> Solar bee filtration units help prevent phosphorus mixing with water column, reducing <br />algae growth and cyanobacteria blooms <br /> <br />Public Outreach & Notification <br /> Public notice will be posted at public landings and on town website before treatment <br /> Friends of Santuit Pond group and Mashpee Lane and Pond Committee will be notified of <br />treatment schedule <br /> <br />Agent <br /> Resource areas: land under waterbodies/waterways (Santuit Pond) <br /> Proposed treatment of aquatic invasive and nuisance vegetation in Santuit Pond <br /> Pond was surveyed for invasive species by Water and Wetlands LLC, a consulting firm <br />that specializes in the treatment and eradication of aquatic invasive species <br /> Identified invasive species present include variable-leafed milfoil and fanwort <br /> Elodea is a native form of pondweed that has grown up to nuisance levels <br /> Area of infestation is limited to the north/northwestern portion of Santuit Pond based on <br />surveying, encompassing roughly 22 surface acres <br /> Summary assessment and recommendations call for the use of species-targeted DEP <br />DEP-approved aquatic herbicides, similar to previously approved applications for <br />treatment of aquatic invasives on Johns Pond <br /> The recommended herbicides do not present a public health risk or any risk to pets <br /> Conservation staff will post advisory signs at the public access point on Santuit Pond <br />prior to any treatment activity, as FYI to the public <br /> Recommendation: <br />o Close and issue with the following conditions: <br /> OOC be issued for 5 years to allow for follow-up treatments as warranted <br /> Submission of post-treatment reports and surveying, along with <br />recommendations.
