("Im "W,
16 Great .1"Veck Road North
Mashpee, . 02649
Telephone - ( CS) 3 -13 5
MASIHPEE HISTORICAL COMISSION
Minutes of Meeting—January 9, 2025
Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Ava at 4:04 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, Brian Hyde, and Lenny
Pocknett. Rosemary Burns Love was on the telephone. Joan Tavares-Avant and
Nancy Soderberg were not present.
Brian Hyde made a motion to approve the Minutes from 12-5-2024 meeting, and it was
seconded by Richard DeSorgher, and they were approved unanimously.
Ava set the next MHC meeting date for Thursday, February 27th at 4:00pm
Richard made a motion to designate the Attaquin, Bourne, Pocknett, and the Amos-
Coombs-Avant cemeteries as historically significant Ancient Burial Grounds and asked
that we approve asking for additional funds to complete the work that has already been
done at these cemeteries. It was seconded by Brian Hyde and approved unanimously.
Richard has been working on the proposed Demolition Delay Bylaw with the new Town
Counsel who has made a few suggestions. One, that we choose a 100-year date for
the property under consideration for demolition; two, that the Select Board notify the
Mashpee Tribal Council Chair about the proposed demolition. After our discussion of
those proposals, we decided that Mashpee needs a demolition delay bylaw, and we
should concentrate on demolition of existing buildings in this proposed bylaw.
The bylaw would not include those homes already in the Mashpee Historic District as
they would be under the statues of the Historic District Commission. This bylaw would
not include any properties which are included on either the State or National Registers
of Historical Places, of which we have only a few.
Richard made a motion that we approve the proposed Demolition Delay Bylaw,
including those changes, and take it over to the Town Manager's office as soon as
possible in order to get it on the Town Warrant for the next Town Meeting. The motion
was seconded by Brian Hyde and approved unanimously.
Richard updated us on his work on the new veterans' monument. The list of military
names will be put up on the Town website. It will be a time-consuming job to verify the
names.
