Freshwater Ponds Committee
Minutes
June 10,2025
Motion seconded by Susan Dangel.
After discussion, the committee agreed to postpone formal organization to a later
meeting in order to allow for more thoughtful consideration and discussion.
Motion withdrawn by Jonathan Small
Goals and Objectives
The committee will focus on the four major great ponds in Mashpee and is composed of
technical experts, concerned community members, and ex officio members.
This committee was formed to articulate the importance of pond protection efforts and to
serve as a strong advocate for related projects.
During the meeting, it was noted that the town now has a dedicated pond management
section on its website, created and organized by the Water Quality Coordinator, Ashley
Fisher. The site is structured by individual ponds and includes links to resources and
other relevant information. A brief walkthrough of the site was provided to the
committee, highlighting uploaded documents and ongoing updates. While the site is still
in development, it was confirmed that all current documents are open to the public.
REPRESENTATIVE INTRODUCTIONS
Committee members introduced themselves and shared their motivations for joining.
The group brings a wide range of experience, including water quality coordination,
conservation permitting, communications, nonprofit leadership, and environmental
advocacy. Several members have long-standing ties with local pond groups, while
others are newer residents drawn to the cause by personal experiences and a passion
for protecting Mashpee’s natural resources.
Many expressed concerns over declining water quality, tree loss, and the impacts of
climate change. A common theme was the desire to collaborate, communicate
effectively with the public, and take proactive steps to restore and protect the health of
Mashpee’s freshwater ponds.
POND PROJECTS
Santuit Pond
The committee reviewed ongoing and upcoming efforts focused on
improving the health of Santuit Pond. One major item under consideration is the
treatment of Variable Leaf Milfoil and Fanwort , invasive species, along with
Elodea, a nuisance species . This project will appear on a future agenda for
further discussion and public feedback.
Several grant-funded projects are currently in progress. A $1.7 million
municipal grant is supporting the reconstruction of Santuit Town Landing. Plans
include the installation of a pump station, along with tribal artwork and a mural,
aiming to create a functional and culturally significant community space.
Additional efforts include a DEP 604b and Section 319 grant project, with
the tribe as lead and the town as co-partner, focused on wetland restoration and
