Town of Mashpee Sewer Commission
t
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
which had been regularly pumping out septic solids tanks. These septic tanks naturally emit strong odors
when emptied, and the proximity of reported smell locations to Sea Oaks supported that explanation.
Delays in Starting MBRs and Safety Systems
Commissioner Lyons raised questions about the plant's bacteria levels and why wastewater was being
hauled off rather than processed. The Superintendent clarified that they had not yet seeded the MBRs
because the required safety systems—specifically the automated call-out safety system known as WIN-
911—were not fully operational. This system is critical for sending automated alerts if something goes
wrong overnight, such as pump failures or rising tank levels.Additionally, the membrane systems
themselves require a minimum flow to function properly, which had only just been achieved.
Once both the flow threshold and the call-out system are in place, the MBRs can be seeded using sludge
from another facility.
Clarification on Odor Sources and Facility Design
There was continued discussion about odor control and whether any system failures at the Mashpee
facility could have caused recent complaints. The Superintendent reiterated that the facility has been
functioning with proper odor management. The design includes vacuum-sealed systems that direct air
through a biofilter and carbon filter, effectively preventing external smells. If residents noticed a
sulfurous "rotten egg" odor, it was likely from traditional septic tank pumping in nearby areas—not from
the town's modern, activated sludge system, which produces a more neutral, musty odor.
ADDITIONAL TOPICS (not reasonably anticipated by Chair)
None
ADJOURNMENT
MOTION:To adjourn.
Motion bv:Joseph Lyons Seconded by:Alfred Towle
Vote: Motion passed by unanimous vote.
Meeting adjourned at 2:53 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Gina Gonsalves
Board Secretary
List of Documents:
Meeting packet
