Town of Mashpee Sewer Commission
t
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
NEW BUSINESS
Monthly engineer update-GHD
Mark Drainville of GHD provided a monthly status update:
Phase One:
• Wastewater intake has begun at the treatment facility.
• They are very close to "seeding" (i.e., introducing specialized microbes to begin biological
treatment).
• A key metric: facility needs to reach 10%of design flow capacity, and they're currently at
14,000-15,000 gallons,which is sufficient.
• Operator training is underway across several days (yesterday, today, and tomorrow).
• Once seeded, the facility will be fully operational shortly thereafter
Mr. Drainville reported that Phase One of the wastewater treatment facility is nearly operational.
Wastewater is now entering the system, and the facility is close to being "seeded" with beneficial
bacteria—referred to as "good bugs"—which is a key step before full treatment functionality begins. The
current capacity threshold required for seeding has almost been reached, with about 14,000-15,000
gallons already being processed, which exceeds the 10%threshold needed. Mr. Drainville also noted
that staff training for facility operations is actively underway.
Punch List and Regulatory Review:
• There are two punch lists:
o One from the MA DEP—now complete and approved
o One to be created by the contractor post-performance testing and will be formalized
after substantial completion is granted, triggering the one-year warranty.
Regarding the state punch list, he confirmed all required items had been completed and approved,
as reflected in a recent DEP letter dated June 18th.This approval triggered formal notification to
licensed contractors and residents.
Chair Harris confirmed that the June 18 letter from DEP reflects final approval to begin notifying
licensed contractors and residents.
Phase Two:
Six construction contracts are currently out to bid.
• Two bid openings have already occurred: one on Tuesday, one on the day of the meeting
(Thursday).
• Three more are scheduled for the following week, and one more for the Monday after.
GHD has been actively reviewing the sewer phasing plan:
• Received feedback from the Sewer Commission, the Select Board, and the Department of Public
Works (DPW).
• Mr. Drainville and Jared Meader(Wastewater Superintendent) recently met to align the sewer
phasing plan with Mashpee's road paving budget and schedule, both retroactively and going
forward.
