Town of Mashpee Conservation Commission 16 Great Neck Road North Mashpee, MA 02649 Path Relocation and Bank Protection (118 Shore Drive West) Under the proposal, the path would no longer approach the top of the coastal bank. Instead, the abandoned path area would be filled in and planted with low vegetation (described as small or"baby" shrubs)to discourage foot traffic and provide additional stabilization. The applicant stated that redirecting access away from the bank would reduce erosion risk, limit trampling at the bank edge, and effectively increase the functional buffer along the top of the bank. Vista Pruning Proposal(118 Shore Drive West) The applicant also proposed vista pruning extending outward from the homeowner's deck, consistent with Conservation Commission regulations. The pruning would focus primarily on shrub vegetation and small saplings near the top of the bank rather than removal of mature trees. Commission discussion clarified that the dominant trees in the area are pitch pines, which appear to be in good health and already limbed up. No significant pruning of mature pitch pines is anticipated. Vista pruning would be limited to maintaining shrub and sapling height within allowable limits, generally through periodic trimming rather than removal. Final pruning limits and methods would be subject to site review and approval by the Conservation Agent prior to any work. ------------------------------------------------- Natural Heritage Review (118 Shore Drive West) During project review, it was determined that the site falls within mapped Natural Heritage habitat farther inland than initially anticipated. The applicant had sought an exemption from review based on replacement of an existing path,but that exemption was not approved. As a result, the applicant stated that a formal filing with the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program (NHESP) would be required, with an anticipated review period of at least four weeks. Commission Discussion (118 Shore Drive West) Commissioners raised no substantive objections to the proposed path relocation or vista pruning concept. Members generally agreed that removing pedestrian access from the top of the coastal bank and redirecting foot traffic inland would be beneficial from an erosion and resource protection standpoint. Vista pruning was acknowledged as an allowed activity within the NUBS when conducted in accordance with Commission regulations and under staff oversight.
