Freshwater Ponds Committee
December 8,2025
Efforts to recruit representation from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribewere noted to be
ongoing, though no commitments have been secured to date.
Members discussed and brainstormed strategies to encourage participation by qualified
experts.
Organizational Structure and Short-Term Goals
Drawing inspiration from pond-focused committees and organizational models in
Falmouth, the committee discussed establishing four initial working groups to advance
near-term objectives through focused, actionable efforts.
The proposed working groups include:
• Pond Inventory and Mapping:
This group will focus on the systematic identification and characterization of local
ponds, including reviewing and confirming information contained in the Cape Cod
Pond Atlas and state-listed resources. Particular attention will be given to
distinguishing freshwater ponds from saltwater systems and correcting
inaccuracies where identified.
• Community Engagement and Formation of Pond Groups:
This group will concentrate on establishing or strengthening pond associations for
Johns Pond and Santuit Pond. Tasks may include compiling homeowner and voter
Lists, conducting direct outreach through postcards or door-to-door engagement,
and leveraging existing homeowner association structures where applicable.
• Educational Materials Development:
This group will develop pond-specific educational and communication materials.
Discussion included potential models such as Falmouth's "Blue Pages"or similar
freshwater-focused publications. Members considered the relative effectiveness of
printed materials versus shorter or narrative-based formats, such as pond histories
or homeowner interviews, as well as partnerships with local media outlets and the
use of digital and social media platforms.
• Town and County Government Relations:
This group will coordinate ongoing engagement with relevant municipal and regional
bodies, includingtheSelect Board, Conservation Commission, Environmental
Oversight entities, and the Sewer Commission. Responsibilities may include
attending meetings, monitoring agendas, assigning liaisons, and building
relationships to support collaboration and future initiatives.
4
