Freshwater Ponds Committee
January 20,206

Amy DuFault is drafting a column for The Enterprise highlighting individuals with personal
connections to the ponds. Irene Checkovich offered to provide a contribution, noting that
many Mashpee Coalition members live on ponds.
Town Government & County Relations
Falmouth Freshwater Committee Meets with BOH
Amy DuFault reported attending a Falmouth Board of Health meeting, which included a
presentation on the septic utility program and monitoring of IA systems, including an
application for an eight-bedroom home near a salt marsh. The Falmouth Pond Coalition
was invited to discuss freshwater pond protection. Amy Dufault also referenced a
Falmouth pilot project moving forward next month involving approximately 25 participants
testing urine-diverting toilets for one year.
Members discussed Mashpee’s fertilizer bylaw and enforcement challenges, as well as the
possibility of broader state-level intervention.
Working Meeting with Boards
Sue Dangel noted that similar water-quality discussions are occurring at the EOC level,
including concerns about appropriate IA systems for lakes that do not remove phosphorus.
The idea of renewed collaboration among committees, including the Select Board, EOC,
and Board of Health, was discussed, particularly around signage for cyanobacteria at
trailheads as well as beaches. The committee discussed the importance of staying
informed and encouraged all members to watch recordings of various town meetings,
including the Conservation Commission and Sewer Commission meetings. Irene
Checkovich reported that she checked with the CPC and, at this time, there are no
proposed May Town Meeting articles related to ponds or water quality.
Update from Visit to EOC Meeting
6
