Town of Mashpee Conservation Commission
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
frames would be mounted to trees using non-invasive methods, such as lightweight materials and removable
fastenings, in order to avoid disturbance to the ground, vegetation, and root systems.
Ms. Thornbrugh noted that the installation would be temporary in nature, proposed for a one-year period from
spring to spring, and would be maintained and monitored by her organization. She stated that the project is
funded through a grant from the Mashpee Cultural Council and that additional funding may be pursued if the
project is successful.
She further explained that the project is intended to serve as a free, self-guided educational activity for the
public, particularly for young children and families, and may also be incorporated into guided programming
offered by her organization. She noted that the project may be expanded in the future to include interpretive
elements such as seating or educational signage, subject to additional approvals.
In response to Commission questions, Ms. Thornbrugh addressed maintenance responsibilities, funding
limitations, and contingency plans should repairs or removal be necessary. Discussion also included potential
future demand for similar projects and the need to evaluate appropriate locations and regulatory
considerations if additional proposals are received.
Staff indicated that the selected location is appropriate for this type of passive recreational and educational use
and noted that the property has historically been identified for similar purposes. Commission members
expressed general support for the project and offered suggestions regarding materials and durability.
MOTION: To approve a story walk at Pickerel Cove Conservation Area.
Motion by: Sandi Godfrey Seconded by: Richard Sahl
Vote: Motion passed by unanimous vote.
(Steve Cook,Paul Colombo, Sandi Godfrey,Richard Sahl, Seana Pitt)
MOTION: To have a 5-minute recess.
Motion by: Sandi Godfrey Seconded by: Richard Sahl
Vote: Motion passed by unanimous vote.
MOTION: To return from readjourn.
Motion by: Sandi Godfrey Seconded by: Richard Sahl
Vote: Motion passed by unanimous vote.
7
