He introduced himself and his <br /> Mashpee Wampanoag background, then delivered a traditional prayer in his native language expressing gratitude <br /> for the land, waters, sky, and all living beings. <br /> He emphasized the deep cultural belief that people are inherently connected to the land, not separate from it, and <br /> highlighted the long-standing stewardship of his ancestors who sustained their community through environmental <br /> changes over thousands of years. He outlined core responsibilities of stewardship—being thankful,taking only <br /> what is needed, and practicing reciprocity—while stressing the importance of protecting natural resources, <br /> particularly water.
